In Review: SSAFW Crafters

Sanlam SA Fashion Week (SSAFW) used their platform to highlight the extraordinary work done by design crafters within the fashion industry to a captivating audience during their Summer 08/09 Collections. During a phone interview with Lucilla Booyzen, Founder/Director, SSAFW, (L) I asked her the following: Q: “How does your audience know which crafters were used during the Collections?” A: “The crafters names were highlighted in SSAFW marketing material” Q: "How was the runway collaboration structured?" A: "We decided to keep the collections pure in presentation while allowing the crafters' skills to blend with the runway presentation". Best to SSAFW with 2009! According to Estelle Cooper, Media Contact, Sanlam SA Fashion Week (SA-South Africa), "the dates for our Fall/Winter 2008/09 Collections are set for March 14 - 15, 2008. We will be featuring cutting-edge designs of both new and established designers such as Lunar, Abigail Betz, Mantsho, Rundle Clive and Story".

The collections will be staged at two venues within the recently revamped Museum Africa in Johannesburg’s ultra hip Newtown precinct, the Old Market Building, 121 Bree Street. This year’s event is set to build on the success of the inaugural event of March 2007, which saw the staging of Sanlam SA Fashion Week's first Fall/Winter Collections in its eleven year history. With winter being a shorter season in South Africa, designers will focus on capsule collections of strong key pieces that bear their distinct signature

The first SA Fashion Week took place in a tent on Nelson Mandela Square, Sandton, August 1997, showing the collections of a mere 17 South African designers, many of them unknown to local consumers or media at the time.

Now, 11 years later, the Spring/Summer 2007 Collections of Sanlam SA Fashion Week featured 56 designers and names like Craig Native, Ephraim and Amanda Laird Cherry have become part of mainstream fashion conversations with international overtones. The sponsors of the Sanlam SA Fashion Week Fall/Winter Collections are Sanlam, Department of Arts and Culture, Five Roses, SABC 3, 5FM, Peroni, M.A.C and Redken.
